By the end of the 80s teen slasher movies were literally hacking themselves to pieces following a tried and tested formula: a tragic event leaves someone mentally scarred, several decades later said person returns on the anniversary of the incident or public holiday, local teens start dropping like flies in a variety of different ways by a shadowy masked figure, the authorities prove useless, one girl (or sometimes a boy) is forced into a showdown with the killer, the killer is unmasked throwing all relative red herrings aside, The End. Everyone is familiar with the formula but this is because it works so well – there is a certain comfort in knowing the slasher guidelines. More

If you were to ask me how many films I’d seen that centred on the Amish community in America, I could count them on one hand.  One of course would be the 1985 thriller Witness starring Harrison Ford but luckily for me the other would be Wes Craven’s occult chiller Deadly Blessing.  Originally released in 1981 by Universal, Deadly Blessing boasts an astounding cult cast featuring Sharon Stone (in her first speaking role) and Maren Jensen as well as horror icon Michael Berryman and Ernest Borgnine who steals the show as the overbearing Hittite leader.  More

Christmas comes early this year for fans of noir as Studiocanal release the first ever UK DVD edition of Hammett.  Released in 1982 and directed by Wim Wenders, Hammett tells the fictionalised story of crime and mystery novelist Dashiell Hammett who, whilst trying to shun off his Pinkerton detective life, manages to stumble back into the seedy San Francisco underworld of lies, pornography, betrayal and mystery.
